One of the six soldiers killed in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan has ties to Iowa.

Joseph Lemm, 45, was killed Monday near Bagram Air Base when a suicide bomber on a motorbike carried out an attack on a joint patrol of Afghan and coalition forces at about 1:30 p.m.

Lemm grew up in Bernard, Iowa and his father still lives in New Vienna. He was also a 15-year veteran of the New York City Police Department.

Bunting now hangs outside the 50th Police Precinct in the Bronx in Lemm’s honor.

He leaves behind a wife and two children.
