SAN PEDRO, Calif. -- Officials say they expect thousands of Iowa Hawkeye fans to board the USS Iowa on Thursday for a Hawkeye-centered pep rally.

David Way, curator of the battleship, said that with a valid ID, Iowans can visit the USS Iowa all week long, thanks to a $3 million grant from the state of Iowa. Way said the grant was to help refurbish the ship to allow it to open for the public.

The ship won a total of nine battle stars in WWII after it was first deployed in February 1943. In total, the ship has spent 20 years in active service and 50 years in the Mothball Fleet.

But today, it is the host for thousands of Hawkeye fans to throw a party in the Port of Los Angeles.
