WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- Fans who couldn't get to California started lining up outside local bars Friday morning to get a good spot for the Rose Bowl.

At the Longest Yard in Valley Junction, manager Mandy Schwenneker said they expect to be at capacity all night. She said their phones have been ringing for reservations since the Hawks bowl bid was announced.

Patrons were lined up early.

“We have our spot,” said the Howes family, of Des Moines. “This is a Hawkeye bar and we’ve been here before. We know how quickly it fills up.”

Schwenneker said a handful of fans were waiting outside before opening time, but the huge rush started around noon Friday. She said they ordered 50 extra pounds of chicken wings, a few extra kegs and brought in dozens of extra chairs to accommodate the crowd.

“It’s always full. We don’t always bring in the extra table and chairs … We were standing-room only for the championship game, so I’d imagined it be bigger than that.”

The Iowa Hawkeyes are engrained at the Longest Yard. The owner played for the Hawkeyes and his brother played for the Hawks the last time Iowa was at the Rose Bowl.
