DES MOINES, Iowa – In a great need for donors, LifeServe made as many calls as possible last week.
LifeServe was down to less than a one-day supply of blood.
This week, it’s up to a one-to-two day supply. However it’s still lower than LifeServe wants on hand.
Supply is typically low after the holidays because donors are busy during the holidays and demand is higher.
With more snow on the way, the need for blood could be increased.
“Blood donation is one of the few activities that doesn't take a lot of money, a lot of time, and it has such a big impact in your community,” Nicole Hanger said. “One donation can help save the lives of up to three hospital patients, so you are generally helping people at a local level."
LifeServe is holding a special blood drive on Friday at its Des Moines donor center from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Donors get a free t-shirt and two coupons from Iowa Pork Producers.
