Top-Ranked 2017 Defensive End Recruit Commits to Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Hawkeyes and head coach Kirk Ferentz landed a prized 2017 football recruit on Sunday.

A.J. Epenesa, the top-ranked strongside defensive end in the Class of 2017 according to, picked Iowa over a list of college football powerhouses, such as Alabama, Florida State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma and USC.

The 6-foot-5, 255-pound defensive force from Edwardsville, Illnois, gave his verbal commitment to the Iowa coaching staff Sunday during his junior day visit in Iowa City. He later announcedĀ his decision over Twitter.

The four-star player is also touted as the No. 27 overall prospect in the country by Epenesa isĀ the fifth commitment for the Hawkeyes in the Class of 2017.
