PORTLAND -- A Portland, Oregon man is in intensive care after a brutal beating allegedly triggered by his Green Bay Packers hat.

Sam Whitehorn's is in the intensive care unit at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, recovering from a serious head injury. His family says part of his scalp was temporarily removed to manage swelling and potential other damage to his brain.

Whitehorn's mother said her son was with two friends when three men approached them. She said the men claimed to be Seahawks fans, and there was an altercation.

"It's hard to fathom that people would take sports that seriously it's just a game, and it seems to me if somebody's that upset over a game they should not be supporting any team," said Kelly Whitehorn.

Police are actively investigating the assault but are not confirming the sports rivalry connection at this point.
