IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A University of Iowa student recently became the first female Iowa National Guard Combat Engineer.
20-year-old Megan Reaska attended her first basic training in Iowa City this weekend after enlisting in December.
She says the moment was both exciting and nerve racking.
“I had no idea I was going to be the first female combat engineer in Iowa,” Reaska said. “I had no idea, it was just kind of like a surprise to me and it's such an honor to be the first female combat engineer in Iowa. When he told me I was like wow, it's exciting, it's very exciting but no I had no idea."
Reaska says her father was the first to encourage her to join the military, and her recruiter, Sergeant Keeler, was instrumental in getting her to where she is today.
She plans to continue school while serving.
