WAUKEE, Iowa -- Three people, including a juvenile, have been arrested and charged for a shots-fired incident in Waukee.
Authorities received a call just before 8 a.m. Wednesday that there was a shooting at Autumn Ridge Apartments at 1165 Southeast Olson Dr.
Upon arrival, officers found a person who had sustained injuries from an assault. Police say the victim was not struck by the multiple gunshots that had occurred.
The victim was taken to an area hospital and was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries.
Preliminary investigation pointed police to three subjects involved in the assault, who were located a short distance from the apartment complex.
They were taken into custody for questioning.
Police identify the suspects as 19-year-old JeJuan Tyre Lyke, Jr., 18-year-old William Ramas Walls and a 17-year-old juvenile.
After further investigation and questioning, all three were charged with second-degree robbery, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, attempted murder and going armed with intent.
Known for its schooling, sports and booming population, negative attention is virtually unheard of in Waukee, catching resident Conny Myles off guard.
“We moved from Chicago to escape the violence and we moved here and it's the same thing. It's kind of scary,” Myles said.
Myles lives in the Autumn Ridge Apartments, a new complex located at the corner of Southeast Olsen Drive and Southeast Brick Drive.
Myles said he heard a group of men fighting across the hall around 8 a.m. Wednesday, followed by several gunshots.
“I threw on a pair of pants and ran to the door and see my neighbor bleeding from the head,” said Myles.
Waukee police say the victim was injured during the altercation but was not hit by a bullet.
Multiple suspects fled from the scene and were believed to be hiding across the street on a different rental property, Winhall of Williams Pointe, at 1205 Southeast University Ave. The complex was placed on lockdown in addition to Waukee High School, Prairieview School and Waukee Middle School. This is the third time the district has placed schools on lockdown in the last six months.
Bu 12:30 p.m. investigators had detained three potential suspects. Waukee police announced around 5 p.m. Wednesday that the suspects were officially arrested and charged.
