Remember the Nordic Track skier? If you've got one, it's probably tucked away in your basement or in the laundry room, doubling as a drying rack for your clothes.
"It's a yesteryear thing," said Dean Ponder, personal trainer and owner of Xpressive Fitness in Urbandale.
Ponder once worked at a Nordic Track store, selling the machines that simulate cross-country skiing. They peaked in popularity in the early 90s.
"You saw ads in every magazine, maybe two or three ads in the same magazine," Ponder said.
Decades later, you may want to dust off your old Nordic Track or purchase a used one.
"You can probably find one on Craig’s list or at a garage sale for around $20," Ponder said.
For that price, you can't go wrong, especially because cross-country skiing is one of the best forms of exercise.
"Once you get the arms involved, then it's total body," Ponder said. "Probably about 78-percent of your muscle mass [is used] at the same time."
It doesn't take long to get the hang of it, and it doesn't take long to work up a sweat. At Xpressive Fitness, Ponder uses the Nordic Track as part of a circuit workout that includes weights.
"So, it's arms, chest, shoulders and back, " says Ponder.
The retro Nordic Track workout is proof you don't need a lot money or fancy equipment to get fit.
