URBANDALE, Iowa – One person was killed in an officer-involved shooting that occurred at an Urbandale hotel early Saturday morning.

The Urbandale Police Department, Polk County Attorney’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are currently investigating the incident that happened just after 4 a.m. at the Holiday Inn located at 4800 Merle Hay Road, according to the Urbandale Police Department.

Authorities say they were tipped off to the hotel on a drug complaint initially. After entering the lobby, officers confronted three people and a scuffle began with one of them. The person in scuffle was in possession of a handgun and fired it during the incident.

Officers returned fire and the individual was hit and succumbed to his injuries.

"There's certain areas in our policy that you're allowed to use deadly force, and shooting a gun at a police officer is one of those," said Sgt. Gary Lang with Urbandale PD. "It'll be a long, drawn-out investigation; the county attorney is involved, DCI, our people. And there's multiple aspects to that investigation - you know, there's the criminal side, we've also got our internal side as far as use of force, and did we follow all of our policies?"

The investigation is ongoing.
