DES MOINES, Iowa -- Over 1,000 runners took part in the annual Red Flannel Run on Saturday.

Runners could choose between a three-mile or five-mile route, and the race started and finished at the Wellmark YMCA downtown.

Money raised from the event will go toward the 2016 YMCA annual campaign to help low-income families become interested in fitness.

"It helps individuals that cannot afford a membership to the YMCA to be able to come down and be a member of the YMCA," said Amy Smith, YMCA Marketing and Public Relations Director. "It allows them to take part in our programs."

This is Red Flannel Run's 27th year.
