Attempted Murder Suspect Arrested After Fight With Officer in Wal-Mart

SAC COUNTY, Iowa -- A man wanted for attempted murder has been arrested.

Fort Dodge police say 36-year-old Jeremy Werneburg was spotted at Wal-Mart located at 3036 First Ave. on Wednesday. Authorities announced Tuesday they were searching for Werneburg after he allegedly hit a man with a car on purpose Sunday night.

When an officer tried to place Werneburg into handcuffs, authorities say he immediately began to fight with the officer. Officer Matt Burns sustained an injury to his left knee during the altercation. Burns then deployed his Taser and was able to take Werneburg into custody.

He was transported to the Webster CountyJail and now faces additional charges: assault on a peace officer causing bodily injury and interference with official acts causing injury. Werneburg is being held in the Webster County Jail on his attempted murder charge out of Sac County.

The victim Werneburg allegedly hit was taken to Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City on Sunday and later transferred to a Des Moines-area hospital with serious injuries. Police did not disclose the relationship, if any, between Werneburg and the victim.
