EAGLE GROVE, Iowa -- Authorities have released the names of the suspect and victim who both suffered gunshot wounds Sunday.

Eagle Grove police say 21-year-old Marcos Fidel Castaneda, of Whittemore, pulled up to 26-year-old Hugo Bello Salinas, of Eagle Grove, in the 100 block of N. Lucas Avenue around 8 p.m. Sunday.

Castaneda exited his vehicle and shot Salinas. Castaneda then turned the gun on himself, police say.

Castaneda was transported to Unity Point Health in Fort Dodge then moved to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Salinas was transported to Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion then transferred to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Police say hospital officials have not released the conditions of either man, but Castaneda has been transferred to a secured facility and has been charged with attempted murder.

Investigators did not release any information regarding a motive, but did say the two men knew each other.

The Eagle Grove Police Department was assisted by the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, Clarion EMS, Eagle Grove EMS and the Eagle Grove Fire Department in the investigation.
