JOHNSTON, Iowa -- A local convenience store is stepping up its level of convenience for Iowans.
Just one of the new features at the Kum & Go Marketplace in Johnston is a growler station, where customers can fill up giant glass bottles of eight beers on tap, seal them up and take them home. And it seems to be doing quite well.
“Someone made the joke that we sold more growlers than we did jelly donuts,” said Sean Bremer, general manager.
The store also features a market with pizza slices and made-to-order sandwiches and salads.
Bremer said what sets them apart from other convenience store competitors is indoor and outdoor seating.
“Eat in and eat outside on the patio with heat. So down to about 40 degrees, you can hit a button and you'd be comfortable to eat outside,” Bremer said.
The store also offers free Wi-Fi and charging stations for customers.
This is the first Kum & Go Marketplace, which is located at 5225 NW 86th St. Company officials say it took two years to develop the concept.
