DES MOINES, Iowa -- Thousands of fans will flood downtown Des Moines Thursday to watch the best high school wrestlers the state has to offer. Officials with the Iowa State High School Athletic Association expect over 80,000 fans to make their way to the tourney and that will lead to a few parking headaches.

“Practice patience as you navigate downtown both driving and walking,” said Adam Flack, woth the Iowa Event Center.

Let’s start with some bad news. There is no direct access to Wells Fargo Arena via the skywalk because of the construction associated with new event center hotel. The good news is there is an app for that.

“The skywalkdsm App includes maps and directions to find your way to Wells Fargo Arena during construction,” said Flack.

Back to the bad news, the closest skywalk exit is at least four blocks away. The good news is the walk won’t be that bad as the temperatures are expected to be into the 50’s.

If you are driving to the tournament, give yourself more time to navigate the extra traffic in downtown. There is ample parking around Wells Fargo Arena and free parking available at Principal Park.

“Parking is available at the Iowa Events Center for $7, in downtown parking garages, as well as on some streets,” said Flack. “Pay close attention to posted signage that showcases any restrictions to street or garage parking.”
