GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson officially dropped out of the Republican presidential race Friday, NBC News reports.

Carson said that he is “leaving the campaign trail” but will remain “heavily involved” in the race. He made the announcement at the Conservative Political Action Conference Friday afternoon.

The news was expected after Carson released a statement after Super Tuesday contests saying he does “not see a political path forward.” He did not participate in Thursday’s GOP debate.

NBC News reports Carson received a standing ovation after making the announcement and promised he would still be “heavily involved in saving the country.”

Carson finished fourth in the Iowa Caucuses.
