DES MOINES, Iowa -- Since the deaths of Des Moines Officers Susan Farrell and Carlos Puente-Morales, there’s been an outpour of support to help their families.

A Des Moines police squad car has become a growing tribute to the officers' legacy of service. Hundreds of people have come by. Some knew the officers, but others only got to know them through the devastating news of their deaths.

Friends and strangers alike -- Iowans want to help.

Hundreds have donated money, but as WHO-HD's Dave Price found out, not all donation sites help the officers' families the same.

Many have turned to GoFundMe.com, a crowdsourcing website. More than 900 people have donated money to the officers’ families via GoFundMe, raising more than $40,000.

But here’s what you may not realize.

GoFundMe takes nearly 8 percent off the top in fees as well as 30 cents per donation. That’s cost the officers families more than $4,000 in donations so far.

The Des Moines Police Officers Burial Association has another way for you to help. The association set up memorial funds for the families.

You can donate in person at the Des Moines Police Officers’ Credit Union building near the statehouse.

The credit union has also now set up a way to donate online. It reached an agreement with Square, which lets you donate with a credit card. Click here to donate via Square.

Square is waiving most of its fees.

That means, whether you donate in person or online, nearly every cent of your donation goes to the officers’ families.

Your choice on how to donate is up to you, but avoiding GoFundMe means more help for your dollar.
