DES MOINES, Iowa -- Thursday, Des Moines police turn to honoring a second officer killed in the line of duty.
Officer Carlos Puente-Morales was killed early Saturday in a fiery head-on collision along Interstate 80 that also claimed the lives of three other people, including his partner Officer Susan Farrell. Tosha Hyatt and Ben Beary died in the crash as well.
Puente-Morales served in the National Guard before recently becoming a Des Moines police officer. At the Iowa National Guard Office in Des Moines Wednesday, soldiers paid tribute to the fallen officers. They posted a sign with an American flag at the office.
Officer Puente-Morales’ roots within the state ran deep as he was both an officer in Des Moines and Ottumwa. He had a strong impact on the Latino community in both places
He leaves behind two sons and a daughter.
A visitation is being held Thursday at Saint Francis of Assisi Church in West Des Moines from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A 7:00 p.m. rosary service is also being held at the church located at 7075 Ashworth Rd.
Funeral services are being held at the same church at 8:30 a.m. Friday followed by internment at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.
