DES MOINES, Iowa -- The sinkhole that consumed a Des Moines homeowner’s front yard and 35-foot tree early Wednesday is nearly gone now.

Crews removed most of the tree and dumped concrete in the crater on Thursday. Crews added gravel to the sinkhole Friday, and after a few tons of top soil and some sod, things will be back to normal -- minus the giant tree.

City inspectors say an abandoned coal mine collapsed beneath the tree, opening the sink hole.
