DES MOINES, Iowa -- Police are investigating a drive-by shooting in which one man was injured on Sunday afternoon in Des Moines.

Authorities arrived at 1530 16th Street around 2 p.m. after one victim was shot outside the residence and taken to the hospital.

Police say the victim was barbecuing with a group of people when a maroon SUV with at least two suspects inside drove up and fired six shots out of the car window.

The victim was taken into surgery at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines with one bullet wound. The victim's current condition is unknown.

Residents of the neighborhood say they have to watch out for violence every hour of the day.

"Our neighborhood needs like 24-hour surveillance," said neighbor Dora Sandoval. "I don't know it's really scary. I don't even want to leave my house at certain times and I will not leave when it's dark. I try to go and come back before it gets dark. It's getting to be where that doesn't matter because look what time it is."

The shooting is still under investigation.
