DES MOINES, Iowa — Golfers call the Principal Charity Classic one of the finest stops on the PGA Tour Champions schedule and it’s right around the corner.
The tournament starts May 31 and attracts professional golfers from around the world, and also more than 1,000 volunteers from 15 different states.
Those volunteers picked up 3,000 pieces of official gear at the Wakonda Club in Des Moines on Sunday.
The tournament says volunteers know their help is all worth it in the end for one important reason.
“The great thing about the Principal Charity Classic is that the proceeds benefit local Iowa children’s charities,” said Loralyn Werkmeister, a Volunteer Coordinator. “Last year we were able to donate $1.4 million. So a lot of these volunteers understand that while it takes their efforts to put on the tournament, they know that they’re helping support local Iowa kids while doing it.”
