Cyclones to Play Vanderbilt in 2017 SEC/Big 12 Challenge

AMES, Iowa – The Cyclones’ opponent and date for the 2017 SEC/Big 12 Challenge has been set.

The Iowa State men’s basketball team will travel to Vanderbilt to play the Commodores on Saturday, Jan. 28 this upcoming season.

The matchup will be the eighth meeting all-time between the schools, with Iowa State holding a 4-3 advantage in the series. The Cyclones also emerged victorious in the latest meeting, an 80-79 win in the championship game of the 1985 Music City Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee.

Steve Prohm’s team is coming off a solid season in which they recorded a 23-12 overall record and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 1 seed Virginia at the United Center in Chicago.

The Cyclones will return several notable players from last year’s team, including seniors Monte Morris, Matt Thomas and Naz Mitrou-Long. The three players have played critical roles in helping the Cyclones reach the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons.

Last season, Vanderbilt finished 19-14 and also earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

After losing their 2016 SEC/Big 12 Challenge game to Texas A&M, the Cyclones are now 4-3 all-time in challenge games.
