DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Perez family insists they are staying strong after two members of their family were recently killed in separate incidents.

“I heard five shots, pow, pow, pow, looked out the window and it was two gentlemen, one guy standing up, saying that ‘they shot him’ and he said ‘somebody call 911’. I called 911,” said Mark Davis, who lives in the neighborhood where the shooting happened just before 11 p.m. Thursday at the corner of 40th Place and Crocker Street.

Joseph Fredrich Perez Jr. was crying out for help, after his older brother, 44-year-old Scott Allan Perez had been shot.

“He was hollering, screaming, you know saying ‘he shot my brother,’” said Davis.

Davis, who describes the neighborhood as nice and quiet, says the gunshots were loud. “It was like a glock, I mean it was a loud powerful gun, and there`s a shot right through that door right there. Lucky nobody got hit there,” said Davis. Police arrived to find Perez`s body lying in the middle of the roadway in the 4000 block of Crocker Street.

Family members say the two brothers were walking from the 3700 block of Center Street to a nearby convenience store when the shooting happened. “He was going to Git-N-Go to get a beer for him and his brother (Joseph) for his brother`s birthday today, unfortunately, so yeah,” said Jenna Perez, Scott’s cousin.

Scott Perez Sr. was the father of 22-year-old Scalicity Perez, also known as Scalicity Boyd. Scalicity was killed in a November 2015 car accident. The driver of that vehicle, Troy Mure Jr., was traveling more than three times the speed limit when he wrapped his car around a utility pole. Scalicity, the passenger, was thrown from the car and killed.

Mure was found guilty of vehicular homicide last month. Jenna Perez does not believe the two situations are connected. “Nope, we don`t believe that there`s anything having to do with the Mure connection at this point. We don’t want any hostile or violence, we are a loving family and we just don’t understand what happened,” said Jenna Perez. “I think it was random. He had no enemies that I know of. He was probably one of the sweetest cousins I had,” said Jenna Perez.

Meanwhile, there are more questions than answers right now with regard to who is responsible for the shooting death. While police continue to investigate, they remain determined to bring whoever is responsible to justice.

“You know, that family’s had a very, very tough…(period of) months with the loss of Salacity Perez, who is Scott’s daughter, you know and also mother to her children, and so the (Des Moines) Police Department and the (Polk) County Attorney’s Office, we worked very diligently to get justice for her death and we’re gonna do the same thing for Scott’s,” said Sergeant Paul Parizek, Public Information Officer for the Des Moines Police Department.

In order to do that, the Des Moines Police Department is asking for the community’s help in gathering leads and information so that their detectives can solve this crime. Anyone with any information related to Mr. Perez’s homicide is asked to contact the Des Moines Police Department at 515-283-4811 or Crime Stoppers of Polk County at 515-223-1400, or submit a tip through their website at www.crimestoppers.com.

As for how the Perez family is handling the loss of two tragedies in such a short period of time, they say they’ve been through a lot, but they’re remaining strong. “We’re strong. We’re very strong, and nobody can break us. Nobody can break us, we are united, 100%, and we give our all,” said Jenna Perez. Jenna says Scott will be buried alongside his daughter Scalicity at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
