Des Moines Offering Free, Outdoor Flicks Starting Thursday

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department has released its list of 16 movies that will be offered at city parks this summer. The first film will be shown Thursday and the last film will be shown on Aug. 25.

Films for the Free Flicks series will be shown on a 25-foot screen under the stars starting after sunset around 9 p.m.

Movies are free to attend, but the department encourages guests to bring blankets, lawn chairs and snacks, as concessions are not provided.

Cancellation notices will be posted via social media.

Thursday, June 2: “Finding Nemo” — Waveland Golf Course (4908 University Ave.)

Saturday, June 4: “An American Ascent” — Evelyn K. Davis Park (1400 Forest Ave.)

Thursday, June 9: “Goonies” — Woodlawn Park (3126 Twana Dr.)

Thursday, June 16: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” — Ashby Park (3200 38th St.)

Thursday, June, 23: “Norm of the North” — Martin Luther King Park (1650 Garfield Ave.)

Thursday, June 30: “The Lego Movie” — The Greater Des Moines Softball Complex (4980 NE 46th St.)

Thursday, July 7: “Despicable Me 2” — Witmer Park (1610 34th St.)

Saturday, July 9: “Little Giants” — Evelyn K. Davis Park (1400 Forest Ave.)

Thursday, July 14: “Despicable Me” — Fire Training Facility (2715 Dean Ave.)

Thursday, July 21: “The Rookie” — Sargent Park (3530 E. Douglas Ave.)

Saturday, July 23: “The Good Dinosaur” — Ewing Park (5300 Indianola Road)

Thursday, July 28: “Guardians of the Galaxy” — Bright-Grandview Golf Course (2401 E. 29th St.)

Thursday, Aug. 4: “Roman Holiday” — Des Moines Art Center (4700 Grand Ave.)

Thursday, Aug. 11: “Hotel Transylvania 2” — Cheatom Park (1100 Day St.)

Thursday, Aug. 18: “Frozen” — Brenton Plaza (520 Robert D. Ray Dr.)

Thursday, Aug. 25: “Cars” — Riverview Park (710 Corning Ave.)

Over 2,700 people enjoyed movies under the stars last year.
