SHENANDOAH, Iowa -- Some 25 or so riders are on a long ride this week to inspect the RAGBRAI 2016 route.

The group left Glenwood on Sunday and spent the first night in a hotel in downtown Shenandoah.

The riders will go around 420 miles on the route, which is the third shortest in RAGBRAI history.

They are looking not just at the roads, but also holding meetings with the community committees hosting the overnight stays and other towns. The RAGBRAI organizers have been holding meetings with communities every other week since January.

The riders also plan to check out some local pies, which RAGBRAI has made famous over the years.

The group also visits local attractions. The town of Corning was planning a tour for the inspection riders of the Corning Opera House and the Johnny Carson birthplace.

The group will stay Monday night in Creston before heading to Leon on Tuesday.
