ALTOONA, Iowa -- Construction of the metro’s first outlet shopping center is set to begin this month.
Boston-based New England Development announced Tuesday that the Outlets of Des Moines property in Altoona is set to open in October 2017. The developer first announced plans for the outlet mall in 2014 and hoped to open in the fall of 2016, but factors such as city approval and lining up tenants delayed the process.
Construction of the 300,000-square foot outlet will start later in June at 801 Bass Pro Dr. NW at the intersection of Interstate 80 and Highway 65.
Outlets of Des Moines will be part of the 175-acre development known as the Shoppes at Prairie Crossing.
Michael Barelli, vice president of New England Development, said the outlet center will “generate hundreds of new jobs, attract over 1.5 million visitors, and add even more energy to the Greater Des Moines market.”
Altoona city officials are excited to welcome the outlet center.
“The arrival of Outlets of Des Moines will enhance Altoona’s prominence as a major destination for travelers to central Iowa," Altoona City Administrator Jeff Mark said in a release.
New England Development has not named any of the stores that will open at the Outlets of Des Moines.
