DES MOINES, Iowa — A three-alarm fire at a downtown Des Moines apartment complex has prompted a popular restaurant to temporarily close its doors.

Fong’s Pizza at 223 4th St. is closed until further notice due to the fire that broke out in a second-floor apartment at the Elliott apartment complex. The restaurant sits on the first floor of the 80-unit complex.

Crews were called to the fire at 219 4th St. about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday after a caller reported heavy smoke coming from the complex.

Fong’s was immediately evacuated as well as all the tenants from the apartments.

The 80-degree temperatures made the operation difficult for firefighters, and a number of them became quickly fatigued. Fong’s employees were seen passing out bottles of cold water to the fire crew and first responders.

Fong’s thanked every department that responded to the fire on Facebook:

We’d like to give our heartfelt thanks to the dispatch, first responders, Des Moines Police, medics and especially theDes Moines Fire Department for evacuating everyone safely last night.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
