DES MOINES, Iowa -- July is National Park and Recreation Month and the city of Des Moines is celebrating in a big way. Tour DM Parks is a new program that will reward park visitors for posting pictures at some of the most popular parks in the city.

”Well, we were looking for a way to extend the parks and recreation celebration beyond the one day Court Avenue event,” Jen Fletcher, Des Moines Park and Recreation. “We came up with the idea to last the whole month. Thirty-one parks in 31 days. Let’s get people out so they can enjoy the park system.”

They are asking the public to visit 31 designated locations in the park system in 31 days and share them via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #tourdmparks.

Fletcher hopes this will get people out to places they’ve never been to before in the city.

”We really just tried to make it a random geographic distribution throughout the city. Also, just a nice even flow of the parks, trails, pools and cemeteries,” said Fletcher.

The first 500 entrants who visit 10 of the 31 locations and submit a photo will receive an Iowa Cubs t-shirt.

The first 500 participants who submit a photo of themselves in at least 20 of the designated locations will receive a $20 “Parks Bucks” certificate

Entrants who submit photos of all 31 locations are then eligible to compete for the “Tour DM Parks” grand prize: a weekend trip to Honey Creek Resort or a Skybox Suite at an Iowa Cubs game.
