ST. LOUIS — An Iowa gymnast is one step closer to competing in the Rio Olympics.

Rachel Gowey of Urbandale qualified Sunday night to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials in San Jose on July 9th. She is among 15 female gymnasts who will compete for the coveted five spots on the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Team.

Gowey trains with Liang Chow in West Des Moines. He coached Shawn Johnson and Gabby Douglas to gold medals in previous Olympics. Douglas also qualified for the Olympic Trials and is trying to make back-to-back Olympic appearances.

Gowey is a graduate of Johnston High School.
