WAUKEE, Iowa - For the second year in a row, Waukee celebrated its growing local art scene.
Sunday, the Waukee Area Arts Council hosted the second annual Waukee Arts Festival in Centennial Park. The council says the festival has already more than doubled in size; last year featured 24 artists, and this year featured 55. There were also two stages showcasing 10 local musicians.
"We actually have people from Wisconsin and Missouri at our show here today. But there's also so many talented local people that need opportunities to show their work, and sell their work," said Cindy DePond, director of the Waukee Area Arts Council. "We also have, I think, five students, who are showing in today's show. And lots of artists that this is their first-time show! So, there aren't a lot of opportunities for those kinds of people, so we want to make sure that it's diverse and that it's open to everybody."
The council says the need and desire for a local arts festival has increased in recent years as the suburb has quickly grown in both geographic size and population.
