DES MOINES, Iowa -- Des Moines' Hope Ministries has hit the two-million meal mark.
Since being formed in 2000, Hope Ministries has served meals to homeless and hungry people in central Iowa. Volunteers average about 13,000 meals a month.
"This milestone points to two things: First, the incredible generosity of the Des Moines community. We would not be able to serve these meals every day of the year without financial and food donations from caring community members," says Hope Ministries President/CEO Leon Negen. "Secondly, it points to the ongoing need in Des Moines and central Iowa."
Feeding America reports more than 12 percent of Iowans are food insecure, including 55,000 in Polk County alone.
