Johnston, Van Meter, Oskaloosa Win State Softball Titles

FORT DODGE, Iowa -- The 2016 state softball tournament is in the books.

In Class 5A, Johnston rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to knock off Pleasant Valley, 3-2.  Brooke Sandstoe had the game-winning RBI.  Senior Haylee Towers was named the captain of the all-tournament team.

In Class 4A, another walk-off win. Oskaloosa, playing in their first championship game, scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat top-ranked Carlisle, 6-5.  Ava Vande Wall, an eighth grader, delivered the game-winning sac fly for the win.

In Class 3A, Benton shut out Assumption 8-0.

In Class 2A, another first-time champ. Van Meter got a two-hit shutout from Bailey Richards to knock off Iowa City Regina, 3-0.  Richards, who also drove in two runs in the third inning, was named the captain of the all-tournament team.

In Class 1A, Kee High beat Akron-Westfield, 7-3.
