DES MOINES, Iowa - Volunteers braved the heat Friday to give a playground on 6th Avenue in Des Moines a much needed face-lift.

Organizers with the property management group, Anawim Housing, say the playground has gone 20 years without any updates. So, along with volunteers from Housby truck dealership, and through funding from Variety, the Children's Charity, they renovated the entire thing.

The slides have been completely replaced, as organizers say they were no longer safe. Volunteers also gave the entire playground a fresh coat of paint. A few more structures will be added, along with a tire swing and new landscaping around the park. Anawim Housing has several property projects in Des Moines, focusing on offering low-income families affordable, quality living.

"Anawim Housing has been strengthening the Greater Des Moines community for nearly 30 years," said Tiffany King, a volunteer with Anawim. "It's so important that we take care of what we have, and strengthen these communities, providing safe places for the children to play. So this is just one example, with our friends from Housby, that we can do that and ensure that the children have a wonderful, safe, beautiful place to play."
