DES MOINES, Iowa — Though classes won’t start for another few weeks, hundreds of metro grade-schoolers are getting geared up for the first day of school.

Cross Ministries is hosting its annual back to school giveaway Thursday afternoon.

Volunteers spent Wednesday packing hundreds of backpacks with school supplies and Thursday they’ll give them out to students from low income families.

The giveaway is being held at the Polk County River Place building at 2309 Euclid Avenue in Des Moines. It runs from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The first 1,500 kids who show up will receive backpacks. Parents are just asked to bring an ID.
