DES MOINES, Iowa — Police are investigating after a car smashed into a building on the city’s east side and officials say it wasn’t the first accident the vehicle was involved in Monday morning.

Police say it all started outside of an apartment complex near East 29th and Easton Blvd. a little before 6:00 a.m. when a car was involved in a hit-and-run accident. The driver got out of the vehicle and argued with someone at the complex and that’s when the female passenger slid over into the driver’s seat and took off.

The driver then hit the brick exterior of a building at the corner of E. 27th and Easton Blvd. Police say the woman suffered a broken leg in the crash. She was taken to the hospital and police say she will be tested for OWI.

The damage to the building, which houses a non-profit that works with intellectually disabled people, is fixable.

The name of the driver who crashed into the building has not been released.
