ANKENY, Iowa -- Beggars’ Night is right around the corner and time is running out for parents to cover trick-or-treating safety with their kids. While it’s traditionally a safe night, there are elevated dangers kids face on Beggars’ Night.

“Some of the biggest dangers are traffic related,” said Karen Peters, Ankeny Fire Department.

According to the Ankeny Fire Department, children are four times more likely to be struck by a car on Halloween or Beggars’ Night than any other time of the year. They offer a few easy tips to make sure things go off without a hitch.

“We want kids to travel in groups because it’s a lot safer in groups,” said Peters. “We’d like them to have something reflective on. A lot of costumes Halloween outfits are really dark. Wearing something reflective such as a bracelet or necklace or belt of carrying a reflective bag, can really help.”

Over the next few days, the department will give out those reflective bags and on Beggars’ Night they will travel the community to hand out neon bracelets.

Peters says that department responds to about double the amount of calls compared to a normal night.

“We see a lot of trip and fall accidents. Kids have those long and flowy costumes that are easy to trip on. Also, in masks with small eye holes it’s hard to see sometimes,” said Peters.

Officials with the department say that you can stop by anytime to go over safety tips, just don’t expect to get any candy on Beggars’ Night.

“(Laughs) We won’t be giving out any candy but if parents want to stop by we’ll give them batteries for smoke detectors,” said Peters.
