DES MOINES, Iowa - An 87-year-old man from Winterset watched the Cubs play Saturday night as he reflected on the last time they were in the World Series.
"I would have been 16 years old I guess, and my mother and I, went to see my sister and we went to the 6th game of the World Series in Detroit," said Bill Martins.
But Martins wasn't at Principal Park Saturday watching the game for himself; he's actually a Cardinals fan. But he came for his son-in-law's 50th birthday party, which was a surprise for said son-in-law.
"Who could ask for a better birthday present? Yeah, Cubs are in the World Series after 40 years and a surprise birthday party with all of these great friends," said Craig Solberg of Des Moines, who turned 50 Saturday. "Yeah, just got to have a Cubs win tonight, that's the only thing."
Solberg's family and friends rented out press boxes at Principal Park as a surprise for his birthday; the group watched the game on the scoreboard, as hundreds of local Cubs fans packed the stadium to watch, as well. Solberg says in his 40 years as a Cubs fan, he never believed he'd be alive to see them make it to the World Series.
