DES MOINES, Iowa  —  The Des Moines Police Department was filled with the sights and smells of a grateful community today.

The lobby of the downtown headquarters is decorated with a truly special tree.   The massive tree, dressed all in blue, was decorated by a family member of a police officer and put up for auction at last week’s “Festival of Trees and Lights”.  Electronic Engineering won the auction then donated by to the department.

Sergeant Paul Parizek says the tree shouldn’t be seen as a memorial to recently fallen officers.  Instead it should be seen as a “thank you” to all officers who walk past it.

Today officers also were given a thank you from a team of volunteers representing south side Des Moines neighborhoods.  The volunteers partnered with locally owned south side restaurants to provide a feast for officers.

Two different breakfast shifts were served for officers as well as a lunch buffet.  Police say they deal with so much negativity in their job that it’s great to have so much positivity around them.
