DES MOINES, Iowa -- Santa Claus has some helpers at the Des Moines Post Office.

The “elves” read every single letter and make sure Santa knows what is on everyone's list then they respond. They not only see the toy requests, but also reminders that the holiday spirit is about more than presents.

“Dear Santa Claus, don't forget the upstairs Christmas tree, there will be a Christmas present under it for you,” volunteer elf Tim Cunningham read from one letter.  “So this child is not asking for anything, the child is giving so that is a special kind of letter.”

Iowa is one of the few states still continuing this tradition. Volunteers say they are seeing fewer letters, as more children turn to email for contacting Santa.

They plan to keep reading letters through next Tuesday.
