Man Rescued from 15-Foot Hole on Des Moines’ East Side

DES MOINES, Iowa – Firefighters rescued a man who fell into a hole early Thursday morning on Des Moines’ east side.

The victim called 911 for help at 4:38 a.m. after falling into a 15-foot hole along the railroad tracks in the 1900 block of East Walnut. Officials say they were able to get the man out of the hole at 5:19 a.m.

Lt. Rick Thomas with the Des Moines Fire Department says the man may be suffering from hypothermia because there was water in the hole. The man has been transported to a Des Moines hospital for treatment.

The hole the victim fell into is believed to have been used to drop grain from a train car into storage.

Police have not released the man’s name and say they don’t know why he was in the area near the railroad tracks.
