AMES, Iowa -- History was made in the Ames City Council runoff election Tuesday night.

Twenty-year-old Iowa State University student Rachel Junck beat incumbent Councilman Chris Nelson in Ward 4 with 54 percent of the vote.

Junck is an Ames native studying chemical engineering at Iowa State. She is now the youngest woman ever to be elected to office in Iowa.

“This is a victory for students, longtime residents, tenants, and for our climate.
