DES MOINES, Iowa — Keeping warm is about the last thing on Iowans’ minds this week, but it could soon be a problem for many.

Estimates show heating bills will spike this year because of colder temps over the winter. The federal government is offering some help though. LIHEAP, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, starts taking applications Tuesday.

The program is designed to help low-income families pay their heating bills.

Last year, about 90,000 Iowa households qualified.
