COLFAX, Iowa -- A man is in custody after an hours-long standoff with authorities in Colfax on Saturday.
Authorities responded to a residence in the 200 block of S. Montgomery Street on the report of a domestic situation at 10:21 a.m. They determined the family left the residence, except for 55-year-old Paul Deaton, who barricaded himself inside with a weapon.
The Jasper County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa State Patrol established a perimeter. They attempted to use a crisis negotiator but said Deaton would not come out or communicate with them. The standoff ended shortly before 3 p.m. when authorities used tear gas to get Deaton to surrender. He was taken into custody peacefully without any shots being fired. No one was injured.
The incident is under investigation.
