Director of Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Retiring

JOHNSTON, Iowa -- The director of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy has notified the governor he plans to retire at the end of June.

Arlen Ciechanowski has been the academy’s director since 1996 and was even reappointed to the position by Gov. Terry Branstad. During his confirmation

Earlier this year the Senate Judiciary Committee grilled Ciechanowski over some troubling issues at the academy during his tenure as director. They included the firing of former Assistant Director Michael Quinn for violations of anti-discrimination and violence-free workplace policies.

The committee ultimately decided to not recommend Ciechanowski for re-appointment. A vote by the full Iowa Senate had not been scheduled before he announced his plans to retire.
