FATAL EXPLOSION: Victim’s Name Released

Authorities are now identifying the person killed in a home explosion in Tama County Thursday morning.

Seventy-two-year-old Mary Appelgate died in the explosion and fire that leveled her home in rural Gladbrook. She lived at the home with her husband Bruce Appelgate, who was not there at the time of the incident.

Twenty-nine-year-old Daniel Dewitt of Gladbrook, a heating and cooling repairman, was at the home when it exploded. He was taken to the University of Iowa Burn Unit in Iowa City for treatments. His condition has not been released.

The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
