FORT DODGE, Iowa -- Fort Dodge police released the name of a woman killed on Monday morning after being struck in the head.
Police were called to 21 North 14th Street in Fort Dodge around 9:15 am on Monday on a report of a man and woman arguing. When police arrived they found 45-year-old Angela McLeod unresponsive inside the residence. She was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.
Mark Russell, 28, of Fort Dodge was taken into custody and charged with First Degree Murder. Police say their initial investigation shows Russell struck McLeod in the head with an object during an argument.
The Fort Dodge Police Department says officers also responded to the scene approximately an hour and fifteen minutes prior to the homicide. During that visit, officers talked to Russell and McLeod regarding an alleged assault. Police say based on the responding officer's initial investigation, it was apparent that they had been in an argument, but the officer could not determine fault or who the initial aggressor was.
Police say both parties agreed to work through their differences and no one requested Russell be removed from the property. McLeod was killed later that morning.
Police say Russell was the ex-boyfriend of McLeod's daughter. Since they were not involved in any sort of relationship, it did not meet the requirement necessary for a mandatory arrest for domestic abuse.
The Fort Dodge Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident.
