The 12-year old victim who managed to escape abduction spoke out Thursday.

12-year old Dezirea Hughes and her parents spoke with Iowa Public Radio's Durrie Bouscaren.

Hughes says she feared for her life when Michael Klunder allegedly took her and Kathlynn Shepard past their homes to a hog confinement.

Hughes says Klunder zip-tied their hands and took Shepard away.

That's when Hughes ran.

“He left the gun on the floor so I took the gun and I ran outside in to the woods and hid as fast as I could. I don't feel like a hero, I feel kind of regret. I feel like I should have tried to go back to help her.”

Klunder was found dead at another location. Investigators say he took his own life.

Volunteers are in their fourth day searching for missing Kathlynn Shepard.
