Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Student Shoots Herself in Thigh

JOHNSTON, Iowa — A student at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy is recovering after shooting herself in the leg Monday afternoon.

Police say she was practicing drawing a firearm and shooting at a target when she shot herself in the thigh. The bullet exited the student’s leg after entry and she didn’t sustain any broken bones.

The cadet is recuperating and this is the first time a student has ever shot themselves at the academy in Johnston.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
