Names Released in Fatal Wrong-Way Crash, Charges Pending

POLK COUNTY, Iowa – The name of a man killed in head-on crash near Pleasant Hill Tuesday has been released.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says 28-year-old Stephen Graber of Pleasant Hill was a passenger in a car that was traveling the wrong way and hit another vehicle head-on. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

It happened in the 7100 block of NE University Avenue, just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses told authorities a westbound Nissan Pathfinder was hit head-on by a Nissan Altima, which was traveling east in the westbound lanes.

Officials say 23-year-old Dylan Winker of Waukee was driving the vehicle that was headed the wrong way on NE University and hit an SUV driven by 72-year-old Brownnie Polley. Graber was a passenger in Winker’s car.

Polley and his passenger, 70-year-old Cheryll Polley, were taken to the hospital for treatment. Brownnie is listed in fair condition, a condition for Cheryll is not available.

Winker is listed in critical but stable condition.

Investigators say charges are pending in the case and they are looking into whether alcohol played a role in the crash.
