Police Identify Man Found Dead in Water Works Park

DES MOINES, Iowa – Des Moines Police have identified the man found dead Friday afternoon in Water Works Park as 40 year old Richard Miles.

Officials say a man walking his dog in a wooded area near the Raccoon River discovered Miles’ body north of the river and called police at 3:36 p.m.

Sgt. Jason Halifax says it appears Miles died of exposure and its likely his body was outdoors for several days. Miles didn’t have a coat or shoes on when police discovered him.

Miles was reported missing back on February 2nd. According to a police report, he suffered from PTSD after serving in the United States Army.

Most recently, Miles worked as a program coordinator at the Science Center of Iowa where he became a local expert in astronomy. He contributed to Channel 13 News coverage about the Lunar Eclipse last year.
